stock certificate
   A printed document verifying the ownership of shares in a corporation. The certificate states the name of the corporation, the state and date of its incorporation, the registered number of the certificate, the number of shares the certificate represents, the name of the shareholder, the date of issue, and the total number of shares in that particular issue of stock. It is signed by the president and secretary of the corporation (usually with facsimile signatures). On the reverse side of the certificate is a form for transferring it to another person. After a transfer, the new owner should register the change of ownership with the corporation. See transfer agent.
